Figure Skating Takes Grit ⛸️

When you watch a figure skater on tv it looks so effortless. But the jumps and artistry is only the the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface of every program lies something far more fundamental: grit.

Figure skating is a sport built on the foundation of dedication, commitment, perseverance. It is often built over time starting at a very young age with early morning sessions as early as 5:30-6:00am. It’s about heading to the rink in the quiet in the cold when the rest of the world is still sleeping in on a Saturday morning. It’s about choosing to practice even on days when motivation feels nonexistent. The path to improvement is rarely linear. It is a process of:

Persistence: Trying an element over and over again, even when it difficult, frustrating, or “off”.

Resilience: The inevitable act of falling down, only to get back up and try again without hesitation.

Accountability: Owning your progress and taking responsibility for your own development.

These aren't just athletic traits; they are fundamental life skills. Through the lens of the sport, young skaters learn how to set goals, manage pressure, and cultivate the healthy habits necessary for longevity. They learn that failure is not the end, but a necessary step toward growth and progress.

Ultimately, figure skating teaches youth how to become more than just athletes. Figure skating instills life long healthy habits such as discipline, resilience, and through adversity we find passion and joy. 🩷
